STUDY WITH DISABILITIES
Over the last two decades, the Cameroonian State has adopted an arsenal of legal texts to facilitate and guarantee access to higher education for students with disabilities.
Although, much remains to be done as far as the Higher Education is concerned, particularly in terms of accessibility to buildings, availability of specialized teachers, development of appropriate teaching and learning materials (books in Braille or sign language, etc.), processing of requests for exemptions and other waivers, extension of exemptions from university fees to PHEIs, the following major assets should be pointed out; in fact, they have contributed to increase over the years the number of students with disabilities enrolled in Cameroonian State Universities:
AdmissionA STUDENT’S DISABILITY should not be a reason for rejection for admission to a higher education institution or ordinary training centers;
Access to infrastructures & buildingsOBLIGATION for public institutions to accommodate students with disabilities: integration of the disability approach in the construction of buildings, public buildings, etc.
Financial aidEFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION of full or partial exemption from university fees in state universities;
TAKING INTO ACCOUNT the disability approach in the awarding of scholarships for academic excellence;
GRANTING of subsidies for the purchase of didactic equipment appropriate to special educational needs.
Accommodation PRIORITIZING disabled people in the allocation of student accommodation;
Recruitment in the Public serviceAGE DISPENSE for recruitment to public service through administrative competitive examinations. By equal qualifications, priority must be given to the disabled person.
